of this hysteria. In the 1980's the fitness craze took off, and fitness clubs and gyms sprung up left, right and
centre. These Commercial gyms were and still are, predicated on the concept of turning a profit. If the general
population knew the truth about weight lifting programs there would not be many of these gyms left. This is
because in their endeavor to make money, commercial gyms need your return business. Think about it; would they make
much if everybody who came in, left 3 months later with the body they've always wanted? The gym would go bankrupt
quickly. But if they can sell you a 12 month membership up front, then it matters nothing to them if you ever step
foot in their establishment again. After all, you've paid for 12 months.

The truth about a weight lifting program is that it is the most beneficial type of exercise, and that it
does not require a membership at a fancy gym, nor does it require thousands of dollars worth of equipment or and
equal amount spent on a personal trainer. Weight lifting can drastically improve both your appearance and your
well being as it burns fat and builds muscle yet also prevents against loss of muscle and stability due to
advancing age. Best of all weight lifting can be done with no equipment at all, as you can exercise using only
your body weight .
The push up for example, can be done anywhere at all and without any equipment. Many would skip the push up in
favor of the bench press thinking they'll build more muscle that way. However for most people, the push up is very
tough. Go do thirty push ups and you'll see what I mean. The push up, although often underestimated, is among the
best weight lifting exercises because it forces you to move your body through space, not just moving a
weighted bar. However, those who can do thirty push ups without crying may want to opt for the additional weight
above and beyond their body weight.
This example can be used for any part of the body, i.e. chin ups for your back, squats and lunges for your legs,
handstand push ups for your shoulders, etc. The benefit is always there when weight training with your body weight.
Yet again, additional weight can be added for those with advanced strength levels.
Essentially, so long as you work every muscle group, consume adequate calories and rest those muscles to allow
them to repair, you will succeed in weight training. There are vertical pushes (e.g. overhead press), horizontal
presses (e.g.. push up), vertical and horizontal pulls (e.g. chin ups & rows, respectively), squatting,
lunging, trunk flexion and twisting. Each of these movement patterns should be completed at least once per week in
order to develop whole body strength.
This next paragraph will send aerobics instructors and enthusiasts into a fit, as the truth about
weight lifting could shatter the pristine world of the commercial gym deception. People go to these classes
faithfully, some weekly, some daily, and believe this type of exercise will help them achieve the body they desire.
They are led to believe this as when they first begin the class, they receive some sort of benefit; lose some fat,
build some muscle, improve flexibility, etc. because it is a new stimulus. However after several weeks or months
some members have left, bringing new members in with zero skill in the given activity.
Therefore the instructor is never able to progress the long term members past where the newbies are. Therefore
they stop adapting (losing weight, adding, muscle, etc) and are left exercising only for maintenance. Without
constant progression the exerciser never achieves their goals but stay in the class because they're told to tough
it out, or that exercising that much will eventually help them towards their goals.
There you have it; far from an expose, but nonetheless the truth about weight lifting. As a final word to the
wise: Aerobics are not evil either, they improve your heart & lungs, and burn calories to keep your waist line
trim.
